To be honest, I am in a confused mode.
Out of all the articles and videos, The Two Cultures by C.P. Snow got my attention the most. The world of literature and the world of digital technology are completely two separate cultures. Snow is very right when he says that when we think of intellectuals, we (or at least I) hardly think of a mathematician or physicist. It is quite sad that these people who have literally worked their butts off trying to make our lives easier don’t really get that much attention. I mean for example, Bill Gates. He is amazing and intelligent and created Microsoft, but how many times do we really think of him as an intellectual? Or at least for some random reason, he didn’t cross my mind.
There is this constant friction between the two cultures. As Snow puts it, “The resentment which the traditional culture feels for the scientific is shaded with fear…”And I agree with him. There is this fear that technology will one day wipe off the ideas of having books. Actually, it already has with Kindle. Though literature is still there, even on the web, and much more useful/handy, there is this constant fear of losing it all.
And that is why I am in a confused mode because I am trying to imagine the marriage between these two cultures, but I don’t know if it’s working. May be as we move on through the semester, I can get a better understanding of this marriage.
