Where ever we are going We are already there

The way our society is moving it seems clear that we are going towards becoming digital ourselves. This isn’t to say that I believe in Gibson’s idea of having digital information stored into our heads, however, it seems clear our society is starting to merge with the fast movement of digital mania. I don’t know how many people are aware of a journal called Captured. It is a journal dedicated to this new movement how we communicate through technology and the irony of the whole idea is they wish to express how technology is dulling our humanity and yet they ask for email submissions and they of course have their own website. My aim is not to criticize the journal for its practices but to state that they are an example of how literary services need technology in today’s world to stay alive.

I think that our society’s inability to write properly and interact is not solely to blame on technology, that would be too easy, but the truth is that we allow oursleves the luxury of having technology do some of the work for us. Phones now have spell checks on them and texting is backing more and more like the new post office that circulatesmillions of messages a day. Hell one day there might actually be a texting cite called the Pony Express because of how it is slowly replacing the United States Postal Service. Society is becoming lazy in its efforts to maintain self sufficant, but  that is not because of technology. It is true that without various electronical devices we might not have the troubles with cell phones and digital piracy, however, people still have a mind of their own, unless we don’t what to make such claims anymore. People can choose to use technology for more productive means, like creating the Digital Humanities. The Humanities are to preserve and as long as our society remembers the role of the Humanities then technologies little temptations wont cause our society to stray and loose itself.

Earlier I pointed out the Journal Capture and I have to say that I think their focus on the issues of dulling our senses is very important. The question of how technology is effecting our culture’s writing deserves to be questioned and criticized when nessecary. The Journal’s goal is to open an interpretation into our NEW WORLD and to remember the old ways of communication. Which if we as a united culture don’t monitor will forever get lost in the cyber space.

  1. One of the issues that comes out in this post is the relationship between technology and writing “properly”. In assessing this, it might help to reflect upon the history of the notion of writing “properly”. What does this mean? How long has the notion been around? In what ways does the digital interact with our notions of “propriety?” Without trying to answer these questions, let me suggest a method for doing so. If we were to search a historical corpus of texts for the word “proper” (and its grammatical variants), would its use start to increase or decrease at certain times. Can we I identify the peaks with particular sorts of historical developments (such as the invention of the internet)?
