Reading this, all I could think was: why? If they’re going to create a digitized version of the analytical engine, why on earth do they need to build a physical model too? What purpose does physically building ancient technology serve, either digitally or physically? We might as well dig up some 6th century plans for a trebuchet and build one just for the hell of it. It seems like a waste of materials to build a physical model when there’s going to be a computer simulation. But the article says absolutely nothing about what are they hoping to gain, or what purpose they are hoping to serve or goal to achieve in doing this. Maybe I’m missing something, but building it just for the sake of doing so seems pointless.
